I have two replies to this one. I use them interchangeably.
1) Funny, I’ve been doing it this way (i.e. the correct way) for years and I know I never will have a problem (also a good line for seat belts!)
2) It only takes one tragedy.
And regarding other “excuses”
Goggles: “they’re uncomfortable” so is blindness
“I look ridiculous” you look more ridiculous with bandages over your eyes
Closed toed shoes: “my feet get hot” oh, is a cast cooler?
Food/drink/gum: actually, no witty comeback. “put that away and don’t be an idiot!”
Any of the above: “I’ll be careful!” the fact that you’re engaging in unsafe practices contradicts that statement.

My all-time fav:
I've been doing it this way for years and never had a problem.
